Repairing a laptop keyboard
Many of us now own a laptop, however, if it breaks we are worried that a replacement part may be costly or the laptop will have to be replaced completely. This however is not always the case. One part of a laptop that can be changed quite easily is the laptop keyboard. Laptop keyboards are usually damaged by spills or simply have a defective key.
If a missing key is the problem, you will need to inspect the metal clasps to look for any damage. It's sometimes the case that the key has simply 'clipped' off and can be pushed back into place. If the clasp is damaged however, you will need to replace the whole keyboard.
Replacement keyboards are relatively cheap, so buying a new one is always the way to go. They are also easy to replace. A new keyboard can also liven up your laptop and give it a new lease of life.
On some laptop models you will find a small strip of plastic above the keyboard that can be prised out. This will hide a few screws, which when removed gives access to remove your keyboard. The keyboard will be attached with a ribbon cable. When this is unplugged the keyboard can be taken out of the device.
On other laptop models you will have to turn the laptop over and look for screws in the base of the machine that have a keyboard symbol next to them. When these are removed, the keyboard should again become free and the ribbon cable can be unplugged.
Other models again will have screws underneath the battery, visible when you take the battery out. Remove these and flip the laptop back over. You will find that the strip of plastic above the keyboard - usually housing the on/off button, volume control etc can be lifted up in turn freeing the keyboard. The replacement process is simple and can be achieved by even a novice. Many websites show videos of how to do this for your particular model.
